ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Commanders’ Super Bowl Era throwback uniforms were a hit in 2025, and all signs point to them becoming more than a one-off. A new report suggests the team is preparing a broader uniform refresh in 2026—one that could include a revamped alternate look and a possible return of the iconic spear logo.
According to FanDuel’s Zach Cohen, who has a strong track record on uniform leaks, Washington is among at least four NFL teams expected to introduce a new alternate uniform. Cohen notes an important caveat: under NFL and retail guidelines, even minor tweaks—such as a helmet stripe or logo adjustment—can qualify as “new.”
That opens the door to a wide range of possibilities. The Commanders could unveil a dramatically different alternate, revive a throwback spear design, or make subtle updates to an existing look. Prior to the Super Bowl Era alternates debuting in 2025, Washington’s only alternate was the black uniform with militaristic numbering and a “W” helmet, replacing the traditional logo.
Why the Spear Makes Sense
Cohen also reports that alternate helmets are expected to change, sparking speculation about the spear logo’s return. While he stresses this remains conjecture, the idea isn’t coming out of nowhere. The Commanders have leaned heavily into spear imagery in recent graphics and videos—and even introduced a new game-day tradition featuring team legends carrying a spear onto the field.
All of that feels like a breadcrumb trail.
Why 2026 Is the Right Moment
NFL teams typically can’t overhaul their primary uniforms more than once every five years, but Washington’s 2023 ownership change provides flexibility. Even with that exception, a full redesign usually takes about 18 months from concept to launch.
That timeline aligns neatly with what fans have seen: the Super Bowl Era uniforms in 2025 as a soft rollout, followed by a full refresh in 2026—four years after the last rebrand, rather than five.
If that’s the plan, Commanders fans can take comfort in one thing: the widely praised throwback look isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
