The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2026 offseason with plenty of holes to address, but quarterback isn’t expected to be one of them — at least on the surface. With Dak Prescott and Joe Milton III both under contract and set to return in the same roles, any changes at QB may be limited to depth moves.
Dak Prescott remains firmly in control. The 32-year-old delivered a strong bounce-back season, stayed healthy, and even re-entered fringe MVP conversations. His contract alone secures his status as the starter through at least 2027, and his play in 2025 made him one of Dallas’ few consistent positives.

Behind him, Joe Milton III continues as the developmental backup. Acquired for a fourth-round pick, Milton spent all of 2025 as QB2 and enters his third season — and first with true system continuity. His athletic upside is obvious, but he remains largely unproven in meaningful action.
Will Grier, a free agent, could return again as a practice squad option. Trusted internally and well-liked in the locker room, he offers low-cost emergency depth and roster flexibility.

The real question for Dallas is trust. If Prescott misses time, is Milton ready to win games? The Cowboys could stand pat and bet on his growth, or quietly raise the floor with a veteran like Tyrod Taylor or Marcus Mariota, or even a late-round draft pick.
Ultimately, how much upside the Cowboys still see in Milton will shape their entire quarterback strategy this offseason.
