Rams vs. Bears in Chicago? History Says Trouble…

Rams’ Record in Chicago: A History of Cold-Weather Struggles at Soldier Field

Sean McVay has established himself as one of the NFL’s most accomplished head coaches since taking over the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. Yet despite his overall success, one venue has consistently proven difficult territory: Soldier Field in Chicago.

For decades, the Rams have struggled when traveling to face the Chicago Bears, and those issues long predate the franchise’s return to Los Angeles. Even during their time as the St. Louis Rams, victories in Chicago were rare, highlighting a long-standing trend that has followed the organization across eras.

Unlike Chicago, Los Angeles plays relatively few games in cold-weather environments. The Bears, by contrast, are built on a tradition of physical football in harsh conditions—a factor that has often tilted matchups at Soldier Field in their favor.

Rams’ All-Time Record in Chicago

Across 47 games played in Chicago, the Rams hold a 14-31-2 record against the Bears. More notably, the franchise has not won at Soldier Field since 2003, enduring a four-game losing streak there and remaining winless in Chicago since relocating back to Los Angeles.

Since that last victory, only seven Rams–Bears matchups have taken place outside of Chicago, with games hosted in either St. Louis or Los Angeles. The four exceptions to Chicago-hosted games during that span came in 2009, 2012, 2018, and 2024, all of which favored the Rams as the home team.

Sean McVay’s Record at Soldier Field

Under McVay, the Rams are 0-2 in Chicago, with both losses underscoring the difficulty of playing the Bears on their home turf.

The most notable defeat came on December 9, 2018, in a highly anticipated “Sunday Night Football” showdown between two of the NFL’s elite teams. Chicago’s dominant defense overwhelmed the Rams, limiting them to just six points and forcing quarterback Jared Goff into four interceptions.

At the time, Los Angeles entered the game with an 11-1 record, having scored at least 29 points in every prior contest. Despite the loss, the Rams finished the season 13-3, while the Bears closed at 12-4—cementing the game as one of the defining defensive performances of that year.

Although the Rams would go on to win three straight matchups against Chicago after that contest, all were played in Los Angeles. The team did not return to Soldier Field until 2024.

As history shows, when the Rams travel to Chicago—especially in colder conditions—the challenge extends far beyond the opposing roster. At Soldier Field, weather, tradition, and physicality continue to shape an unforgiving environment for visiting teams.
