Brandon Aiyuk’s journey with the San Francisco 49ers has taken an unexpected turn—from rising star to potential offseason departure. According to recent comments from general manager John Lynch, the talented wide receiver may have already played his final snap in a 49ers uniform.
Although Aiyuk has yet to be officially released, his name is quickly surfacing in offseason rumor mills. Despite missing the entire season while rehabbing knee injuries, the 27-year-old remains an appealing option for teams in need of a proven playmaker on the outside.

One such team, according to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, is the Washington Commanders.
“An obvious landing spot is Washington,” Barnwell wrote, pointing to the presence of former 49ers executive Adam Peters in the Commanders’ front office. Washington also has a potential opening at wide receiver with Deebo Samuel expected to hit free agency.
There’s another layer to the connection. Aiyuk and Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels were teammates at Arizona State, a reunion that could benefit both players. For Aiyuk, a familiar quarterback and system could help restore confidence after a frustrating, injury-plagued stretch.

Still, the financials complicate the situation. Aiyuk is set to earn roughly $27 million annually under the four-year, $120 million extension he signed with San Francisco in 2024—no small commitment for a player who hasn’t seen the field since mid-2024.
Even so, Washington’s flexibility with a quarterback on a rookie contract could make the gamble more palatable.

Barnwell also noted that Aiyuk nearly exited San Francisco once before. The 49ers were close to trading him to the Pittsburgh Steelers last year before resolving their contract standoff with the lucrative extension. Unfortunately, persistent knee issues derailed those plans, and Aiyuk’s standing with the team reportedly worsened due to concerns about his commitment to rehabilitation.
Since being drafted 25th overall in 2020, Aiyuk has compiled 294 receptions, 4,305 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns—numbers that underscore his upside when healthy and focused.
A fresh start in Washington could be exactly what Aiyuk needs. Whether the Commanders are willing to absorb the risk—and the contract—remains one of the more intriguing questions of the offseason.
